Description

A delicious and hearty Deep Dish Chicago-style pizza filled with layers of cheese, sausage, and a savory tomato sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornmeal
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 pound mozzarella cheese (sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 3 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 pound Italian sausage (cooked and crumbled)
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, salt, sugar, and yeast. Stir in melted butter and warm water until the dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1.5 hours.
  2. Prepare the Sauce: Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add onions and sauté until translucent. Stir in garlic, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Cook for 1 minute. Add crushed tomatoes, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Assemble the Pizza: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Grease a deep-dish pizza pan or a round cake pan. Roll out the dough to fit the pan, pressing it up the sides. Layer mozzarella cheese slices over the dough, filling the entire bottom. Add cooked sausage on top of the cheese. Pour the prepared tomato sauce over the sausage layer. Sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese on top.
  4. Bake: Place the pizza in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, until the crust is golden and the cheese bubbles.
  5. Serve: Let the pizza cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired. Slice and serve warm.

Notes

  • Ensure the water for the dough is warm but not too hot to activate the yeast properly.
  • Use a sturdy pan to support the weight of the ingredients and prevent any leaks.
  • For extra flavor, brush the crust with garlic butter before baking.
